EcoChallenge 2012

Sarah Cleveland

Sarah Cleveland

Dear family, friends and industry colleagues: This is my 3rd year participating in the EcoChallenge and I am focusing on small changes that are likely to become habits. Here are my commitments:

• Transportation: Use public transportation (instead of driving) for 2 trips per week and purchase carbon offsets for my air travel during October (nearly 9,000 miles!) from www.communityfriends.org (because I know Carsten who started Community Friends).

• Food: Limit my meat meals to 2 meals per week and try 2 new recipes per week.

• Trash: Only use re-usable mugs, water bottles and grocery bags.

Thank you for your sponsorship. I encourage you to take on some behavior change as well during these 2 weeks. Many suggestions are listed on this web site. Have fun with it! You may know that I’ve been involved with the Northwest Earth Institute for nearly 10 years and am very passionate about our mission, “inspiring people to take responsibility for Earth”. Your participation matters!!

~Sarah

Thank you, again, to all of my supporters and the many well-wishes I received for my birthday (October 25th). Wonderful. ~Sarah

I'm in Philadelphia right now at the end of a 3-week East coast trip. I certainly have exceeded my public transportation commitments on this trip and my experience confirmed what I already knew but didn't always practice - public transportation is much easier and quicker than driving in any large city. Being focused on these "small" changes is very valuable for me to continue to be intentional about my choices. Not as easy as I'd anticipated in our predominant 24/7 "more is better" culture. I also feel gratitude for our natural world and all of us living in it! ~Sarah

It's a rainy day in New York, but that didn't deter me from getting some exercise and walking/jogging down by the Hudson River. I've decided to continue my EcoChallenge for 2 more weeks until the end of October. I will be traveling around and about the East coast returning to Portland on October 31st. I have plenty of opportunity to use public transportation! ~Sarah

I am honored by the tremendous support I am getting from family, friends, and industry colleagues! Thank you everyone. My first week I was very successful in all areas except my alternate transportation. I am headed to NYC now and will be taking public transportation everywhere. Today I have changed my choice for lunch and continue to tote my water bottles around, filling them in the airport. I find I have to be intentional about my actions. Truly a journey. Thank you for your support. ~Sarah

I am on Day 5 of the EcoChallenge and all is going very well! I continue to be amazed at needing to remind myself about the little things like using my re-usable water bottles - filling them all up before I board the plane - and using my re-usable hot drink container for my coffee. I am completing 4,239 miles of air travel today and just bought my first batch of carbon offsets. This translates to 2.89 metric tons of CO2. What does that really mean? The offsets at www.communityfriends.org cost me $78.

I've been trying to use only reusable bags and do one veggie meal a week...and walk if its less than 6 blocks...no matter how long it takes...little changes are remarkably challenging. My next goal is to replace all baggies with wax paper bags for sandwiches and such. baby steps maybe...but each one makes a difference.

Sarah, you rock! Way to set an example not only for the board, but also for the citizens you come in contact with. Your success exemplifies what I hear Dick Roy say recently - "what is needed is time and intensity."

Good for you, I'm working on using a glass for my drinks instead of the small bottles/cans, and I do have a travel mug for coffee. Hard to change habits, but since the kids have moved out I don't use nearly as many disposable items.

Good luck Sarah, and thanks for the inspiration to live more sustainably. At BGI, we did a personal sustainability assessment and kept a journal to track behavior over time. It really opened my eyes to how unsustainable my life was, and remains largely so today. Very tough to make big strides when modern day life is engineered to be very unsustainable. But we must keep working to change our ways, and the systems in which we live. All best- Kyle
