EcoChallenge 2012

Todd Hutchinson

I will try to buy nothing that is imported from China. Part of the reason is to see if it is possible, and the main motivation is to reduce my carbon footprint while keeping my money closer to home. I expect that it could be very difficult or expensive to find substitutes, and some of it will be imported from other countries. The attempt should be educational, and make me more aware of where everyday things come from.

Goodyear wipers are made in the USA! I found a Goodyear service center near home, so I'll get new wipers there. It feels good to support American jobs.

I went to Las Vegas for 6 days, and I didn't buy anything labeled Made In China. I need to check the souvenir glasses I bought, but I don't think they have a country of origin on them. I forgot to take my flip-flops, but suffered without them by wearing slip-on shoes by the pool rather than buying more Chinese plastic. We need some windshield wipers for the car. Supposedly, Michelin brand isn't Chinese made, and ironically, they're mainly sold at Wal-Mart. Maybe I can find an actual Michelin tire store that will sell me a set.

My wife and I went clothes shopping over the weekend, and I only got myself a shirt. It wasn't made in China, but I don't consider Vietnam to be any improvement. A lot of clothes we buy in the US are made on the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia and still travel a long ways before getting here.

So much for the Master Lock I was thinking of buying. In 1999 they sent a lot of manufacturing to China, and only recently brought a portion of it back to the Milwaukee plant.
