Team Jefferson Smith
The next mayor must lead on climate change and ensure both transportation and land use planning incorporate our goals for reduced emissions. If elected Portland’s next mayor, Jefferson will work to integrate locally-appropriate climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies into our decisions, and to ensure we lead by example in the region.
But it’s not just the mayor who can make an impact. Portland’s distinctive strength isn’t a string of benevolent politicians, it’s people that are more engaged and more creative than anywhere else. When taken together, the individual choices we make, the habits we form, the lifestyles we live have a major impact on our environment. This is why Team J is taking the EcoChallenge. If Portland is to claim the title of being the most sustainable city in the country, it will not be because of a policy from on high. It will be because of the tireless, dedicated work of all of us.
As a campaign, we’ll work toward trash reduction by eliminating the use of disposable plastics and growing our existing office recycling. This will mean ordering less takeout. Pausing to figure out where we’re going to throw those coffee grounds. Taking a cup to the tap instead of reaching for a bottle of water. To do this we’ll have to slow down slightly from the rapid pace of the campaign. But it’s worth it.
Additionally, each of us will take on an individual challenge to stretch us personally. Chefs will learn how to cook with organic ingredients. Lifelong carnivores will learn that it’s not so bad to be vegetarian. Starbucks addicts will go local. And a very busy candidate will discover the side-benefits of taking just five minute showers.

I made a significant change in my EcoChallenge. I've decided to give up cursing. My personal atmosphere needs as much attention as the larger environment, and after dropping a couple of f-bomb adjectives on my extremely ladylike mother during a heated conversation, I realized I need to correct this bad habit immediately.
Without thinking, grabbed a bottle of gatorade yesterday at lunch...
Close call last night. Caught myself as I was about to order a bottled beverage. This challenge has prove tougher than I anticipated but still feel great about my decision to participate and proud and I have been successful thus far.
